That time I didn’t get to be a SoleSister

On a miserable, snow-y evening back in early January, I registered for the Sole Sisters Women’s Race. I’d wanted to participate the year before, and couldn’t, but I was going to do it. I couldn’t wait. It was only a 5km, and I knew I probably wouldn’t end up running it because the course would be too congested but I started training anyway.

I was on track to do my 5km in just over 23 minutes.

And then I realized that it was going to be hard to get a babysitter, but I figured it was a mini-obstacle to deal with. And then I found one, and I was ready to go. Until the dinosaur-shaped invite arrived.

F was invited to attend his new friend Hunter’s birthday party from 4:30 – 6:30 pm on June 6. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. And I know full-well how whiny it sounds when I say that I just wanted to do something for ME. Self-care is hard, and a little self-care was all I had in mind when I registered for SoleSisters.

(This was a perfect example of a time when I wished I had a partner OR my family nearby.)

Contrary to the comment left by my lovely reader, NewMom (hint: that was sarcasm), I actually *do* put F first all the time. My wants and needs almost always come second fiddle to those of my boy.  And the race that I registered and trained for, looked forward and counted down to came second fiddle to eating pizza and cupcakes with a bunch of screaming kids while I awkwardly tried to make friends.

And I’d do it again.
